Again, I think I knew this from the live Blasphemous Rumours 12" before I ever heard the studio version.īut god bless that 1989 UK CD reissue of S&S that has these tracks plus "Dreaming of Me," "Any Second Now," and the Schizo mix of JCGE. This could also have been re-recorded into something different, if not necessarily better. It sounds a bit to me like the early product of the Human League, like "Being Boiled" in its first version before the re-recording.
Stick it on the reverse side after "Tora! Tora! Tora!" and you'd get a dark, deep sequence. "Ice Machine" is a bit dull, but its structure and melody are different for Vince Clarke and therefore I think it could have found a place on the album. I knew this track from the green live EP before I knew the studio version I prefer the studio version. I really like the Rio Mix, too, the vaguely Latin vibe in the second half is so surprising and yet was kind of in the song all along, just so overwhelmed by the space-age sound and the filtered vocal.
There's a through-line back to disco records. This one to me is a real club track it's no surprise that their first real extended version is of this song.
"Shout" is one of my favorite early tracks by DM, because of the experimental sound of it and the choices in production that many here are complaining about.
